The second piece in the series features a Red Tail Hawk's Egg setting on a large, rusted fish hook and dangling by a vivid red thread.  The title implies that the knot is imperative to the safety of the egg, but I'm sure that we all recognize that just a little bump will send the egg tumbling off of it's perch on the hook.
Red Winged Blackbird's and Western Meadowlark's EggsStudy for my third painting in this series
When I started this project, my family and I were living in El Paso, Texas.  It's a really long way from where I grew up, in the beautiful Bitterroot Valley of Montana.  I miss the singing of these birds almost as much as I miss the lushness of the river valley that I grew up in.  Looking forward to painting this.

I reworked this sketch, to include an antique hat pin.
While planning the color scheme for "Full of Wish", I decided to use a small board that I had received when I ordered some new metallic paints.  After completing the main color schematic, I decided that I may as well develop another piece and complete it.  The following are two sketches that I did in order to decide which one to use in this piece.  The egg belongs to a Cedar Waxwing, and I've placed it in an enamel lined antique salt cellar

Encaustic, India Ink, Rust and xerox transfers of my sketches

This is the finished piece. I chose the alternate view as I found it to be more compelling.  This piece is once again worked in relief.  The salt cellar has a diameter of only one inch, and the acorn atop it is less than a cm wide.  Needless to say, achieving this level of detail in beeswax at that small size was difficult.

You can see the three dimensional element of this piece in this photo.

The barnacles are so delicate, and when they catch
the light, their edges are transparent.
Another sketch for Suspensa Ova.  Bones of My Bones, You Four Are. I was working on this when I heard about the Newtown shooting.  What was already a poignant piece for me became almost unbearably hard to draw as the eggs in this piece represent my own children and our dance with mortality.
